Summer Travel Map
Lake Powhatan Recreation Area
Pisgah National Forest, North Carolina
Today we decided to hike Looking Glass Rock.
Doesn’t it look like a BIG Whale???
The hike begins on the left at the whale’s tail.
You proceed up its back to the top of its head which would be the summit.
When you get to the summit,
Yep, the top of that sheer rock face is its forehead :o))
From the trailhead, this is a 6.5 mile roundtrip hike.
It is steep, but made manageable, with many switchbacks.

Hiking through the Mountain Laurel!!!
So many beautiful plants…
As you get close to the top, there is a helicopter landing pad.
It’s there for a reason, so be very careful where you walk!!!
As you get close to the summit, the trail gets steeper.
There really isn’t much to see at the summit.
The trees block the views;o((
You must hike down and out to that rock forehead.
Bill started down the trail and stopped abruptly when he reached the opening…
This is what he saw…
He immediately transitioned to “Butt Hiking” ;o)))
He stayed put and got our lunch unpacked
while I took a few photos of the amazing views!!!
We spent at least an hour sitting there enjoying the spectacular views.
ABSOLUTELY AMAZING !!!
That looks like a great hike! So green and those flowers were beautiful. I've never seen them before.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful Hike!
ReplyDeleteWish we had been there. Looks like our kind of hike. Tell Bill that his long lost "brother" says it is OK to "get off his butt" :-)
ReplyDeleteRoger, I told him;o)) He said, "You're too funny and that ain't happening!!!"
DeleteI never get tired of seeing those beautiful mountain views!
ReplyDeleteWow -- beautiful, but a little scary at the same time! I would have been "butt hiking", too!
ReplyDeleteHi guys. We have a question, what do you use for a small carry around camera? We are sort of in the market for a new one and have always enjoyed your photo's and quality. It seems I remember reading about a new camera recently but couldn't find it in my search. Take care!!
ReplyDeleteGlad you enjoy the photos :o))
DeleteMy new camera is a Panasonic Lumix DMC-ZS30. It replaced an earlier version of the same camera which I just wore out.
Most of the time, I carry two cameras ;o(( The Panasonic and my Nikon D3000 with a 55-200mm zoom lens. I prefer the Nikon with a viewfinder and the zoom to capture wildlife, flowers, etc. However, I can't capture the views and that's what I carry the Panasonic for. The best thing about the new Panasonic is the panoramic mode!!!
I have an 18-55mm lens for my Nikon, but I do not want to switch lenses all the time. I really need a 18-200 or 300mm zoom lens for my Nikon on I could do it all with one camera. However, they are EXPENSIVE and HEAVY!!!
Hope this helps :o)
Butt hiking? Too funny! How many miles does he get to the seat on his shorts? :cD
ReplyDeleteThe mileage isn't good and he can go through quite a few pair of shorts. However, we save big bucks on hiking boots, so it's a wash ;o)))
